With over 200 years of combined training and experience, VIRA’s physicians are skilled in over 40 noninvasive procedures, from inserting ports to repairing spinal compression fractures.

VIRA doctors treat and consult with many patients in our North Macon office. Ultrasound diagnostics, venous reflux studies and venous ablations are also performed in the VIRA office suite. VIRA has an office-based surgery suite for uterine fibroid embolizations, vertebral body augmentations, epidural steroid injections, sphenopalatine ganglion blocks (headache blocks), thyroid FNA’s and other protocols. More complex procedures are performed at either Coliseum Health System or Navicent Health Medical Centers.

At any time, we are available to discuss a patient problem or treatment issue with you. One of our IR physicians is always on call 24/7. Our hospital coverage includes the Medical Center of Central Georgia, Coliseum Medical Center and Coliseum Northside Hospital. Our goal is to provide you and your patients with the most current treatment available in a professional manner.

VIRA PROCEDURES

Varicose Veins
  • Approximately 1 in 5 adult Americans suffer from superficial venous insufficiency, the disease that causes varicose veins.

  • Symptoms include: leg pain, aching or cramping; burning or itching of skin; swelling, “heavy” feeling in legs, restless legs, open sores, varicose veins or spider veins.

  • VIRA physicians are the only Central Georgia practitioners to offer two effective treatment protocols: Radiofrequency (RF) Ablation and the new Laser Therapy.

  • Both RF and Laser therapies deliver great results with a minimum of down time, low risk of infection, minimal pain and bruising.

  • VIRA physicians include schlerotherapy in venous treatments to ensure the results will last.

Uterine Fibroid Embolization
  • Approximately 20-40% of women over 35 will develop fibroids, most commonly in women of African-American descent (as high as 80%).

  • Women with fibroids suffer with heavy, excessive menstrual bleeding and prolonged monthly periods, frequent spotting, anemia, pelvic or bladder pressure and/or pain during intercourse.

  • Traditionally hysterectomies are performed to treat women with severe symptoms, but VIRA’s noninvasive Uterine Fibroid Embolizations allow women to keep their ovaries with significantly fewer complications, shortening the hospital stay and allowing them to return to work faster.

Vertebral Body Augmentation
  • Patients with primary or secondary osteoporosis, cancer or benign lesions often suffer painful spinal compression fractures as their bones become more porous.

  • VIRA physicians are highly skilled in three leading-edge, minimally invasive treatments to repair vertebral body angular deformities and stabilize the spine.

PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease)
  • Our subspecialty trained, board certified physicians at VIRA are vascular experts in diagnosing and treating diseases of the blood vessels including PAD (a common circulation problem in which the arteries that carry blood to the legs or arms become narrowed or clogged).

  • Not all leg pain is a result of clogged arteries. Vein disorders, spine or nerve problems and even hip or knee joint disease can result in leg pain.

  • Following our consultation and examination of you, we will determine which diagnostic tests are appropriate to pinpoint your problem and recommend appropriate treatment.

Cancer Treatment
  • Working with the oncologist or urologist, VIRA’s doctors treat certain tumors involving the liver, kidney, lung, and bone with targeted, minimally invasive treatments include radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and embolization using low-dose radioactive particles or chemotherapy agents directly into the tumor, among others.

  • VIRA’s interventional physicians can also help your patients who may develop neuropathy from chemotherapy treatments.

Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block (SPG Blocks/Headache Block).
  • Endorsed by the National Migraine Foundation, the International Headache Society and National Headache Foundation, the new SPG block procedure is an injection of a numbing agent through the nostrils (one or both), guided by imaging to reach the sphenopalatine ganglion, the nerve bundle which plays a role in causing pain associated with acute and cluster headaches, trigeminal neuralgia, TMJ, RSD, face, head and neck pain from cancer. The procedure requires zero recovery time; with no or very minimal side effects.

  • At the initial consult, your patient is qualified and then subsequently treated weekly for 3 weeks.
